Certificate Renewal

The COS-C designation carries a 3 year recertification requirement, with retesting required prior to the expiration of the third year. Special renewal notes:

Reduced renewal fees:

  • The reduced renewal fee only applies if the renewal exam is taken BEFORE the 3 year anniversary of the previous exam where the COS-C was granted.
  • Renewal registrants must indicate the city and state where the previous exam was taken.

In order to demonstrate continued competence in OASIS scoring, the COS-C will sit for and pass the COS-C exam at either:

  • a paper-based exam administration (see Paper and Pencil-Based Testing);  refer to the OCCB home page for dates and locations of future exams
  • a computer-based exam administration at one of the approved testing center locations (see Computer-Based Testing).

(Note: The COS-C exam is used for both renewal purposes and for a candidate's initial testing. There is not a separate renewal examination.)

Upon successful completion of the examination, the COS-C is considered a COS-C in good standing and may continue to use the COS-C designation behind his/her name for the period of three additional years.

Continuing Education

In order to stay current with the most recent CMS guidance, all COS-Cs are encouraged to participate in continuing OASIS education. The COS-C designation, however, does NOT carry with it any specific requirement of continuing education or proof of attendance at OASIS education courses.

Lapse of Designation

If a COS-C does not sit for the COS-C exam by the end of three years after the date of their last successful examination, they are no longer considered a COS-C in good standing and must discontinue using the COS-C designation.
