Request for Special Test Accommodations
The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that special arrangements be provided to applicants with a disability (as defined by Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act) who submit with their application, a written explanation of their needs and appropriate medical documentation.  Notice must be given to OCCB within three weeks of testing.

Fees and Payment Methods
Examination fees are payable to the OCCB, Inc. via credit payment on the OCCB website.  Personal or business checks are accepted and must be received by the examination date.  If special arrangements are needed, please contact OCCB, Inc at least two weeks prior to the official exam date.

Examination Cancellation and Rescheduling

A candidate may cancel and reschedule the examination once.  You must cancel at least 5 business days prior to paper & pencil testing and 5 business days for computer based testing using the appropriate notice.  Candidates seeking excused absences must submit written verification and documentation of the situation to the OCCB within 5 days of the original examination date. You have three months to reschedule your exam by paper/pencil or computer based testing.  After the three month period refer to the original fee schedule.

If a candidate cancels the exam due to an emergency or hardships, such as an immediate family members' death or serious illness after the five day cancellation period,  he or she may be permitted to reschedule the examination upon approval of the OCCB office.  Notice must have been made before the exam and will be on a case to case basis.    You may re-schedule on the OCCB, Inc website.  

There will be a $25 processing fee upon rescheduling to cover administrative costs.

No Refunds

  • There are NO refunds given on the exam.  You may re-register according to the cancellation and rescheduling guidelines. 
  • Candidates failing to arrive on the scheduled date and time of testing will not be refunded any portion of their examination fee and will forfeit the exam fee. Candidates arriving more than 15 minutes late for an appointment, or failing to present the proper identification or required documentation will not be admitted and will forfeit their examination fee. The original fees will be applicable to reschedule.

Inclement Weather/ Other Emergencies

  • In the event of severe inclement weather or other unforeseen emergencies on the day of the examination, you may contact the home care association responsible for proctoring the paper & pencil exam or AMP's weather hotline for the computer based testing at 913-495-4418.

Identification

  • You must provide the proper identification to gain admission to the testing site.  Failure to provide the appropriate identification at the time of the examination is considered a missed appointment and fees will not be refunded. 
  • You must have two (2) forms of identification, including a current driver's license with photograph, a current passport or a current military identification card with a photograph.  Temporary identification cards are not acceptable as a primary form of identification. 

Security

  • No guests, visitors, or  family members are allowed in the testing centers. 
  • No personal items, valuables, or weapons are allowed in the testing centers. 

Restrictions

  • No cameras, tape recorders, calculators, PDA's, pagers or cellular phones are permitted in the testing room.
  • No questions regarding content of the exam may be asked during the examination.
  • Eating, drinking or smoking will not be permitted during the examination.

Misconduct

Individuals who engage in the listed conduct will be dismissed from the examination and will forfeit their examination fee.

  • Creating disturbances, abusive or uncooperative behavior
  • Displaces and or uses electronic equipment
  • Attempts to record examination questions or make permanent notes
  • Offers, assist or solicits assistance from other candidates, examiners or proctors
  • Engages in any other conduct or inappropriate behavior which is injurious to the integrity of the examination or to any of its participants.

The candidate may be subject to penalties up to and including dismissal from the examination.

Retesting: Candidate Fails

In the event that a candidate fails the certificate exam, the candidate may reschedule.  Please refer to the examination fee rates.  The fee for a retake remains the same as for first-time candidates.

Testing of diagnostic coding within the COS-C exam will be limited to testing of ICD-9-CM coding guidelines and specific CMS requirements and concepts, specifically as they apply to completing the coding-related OASIS items. No application of specific codes will be required. The ultimate goal is to determine the candidate's ability to identify responses consistent with CMS guidelines, using resources he/she would be able to access in the home or clinical working environment, therefore reasonable access to such resources materials will be allowed during the examination.

After the Examination

  • Paper & Pencil  Exam- You will receive notification of your examination results in 6 to 8 weeks. 
  • Computer Based Testing -  You will receive examination results upon completion of the exam.  You must complete an AMP and OCCB satisfaction survey before receiving exam results. 
  • A "fail" report will include details indicating the candidates performance by content area.  This will hopefully allow focused study which can result in greater success on a future examination retake.
  • A "pass" report will indicate the earned COS-C designation.  You will receive a congratulatory letter, your COS-C Certificate, a press release and the COS-C pin within six weeks.   Successful candidates may at this time use the COS-C designation behind their name.

The COS-C Exam is administered across the country throughout the year. The examination is also offered at national conferences, educational workshops, and through computer based testing centers. Training programs are administered through state and national associations, but are not required to sit for the examination.
